About Us

The St. Joseph Preserve

Set on an idyllic 340 acres of old growth forests, ponds and rolling grassland hills with sections along the Crow River Valley in central MN The Saint Joseph Preserve offers a chance to develop a more loving relationship with God through the intercession of St. Joseph.

The Saint Joseph Preserve offers year around self directed retreat experiences. Hikers are welcome to come and pray on the five miles of trails covering many acres of scenic woodlands and prairies. Our mission is to provide beautiful natural spaces, facilities, resources, and Catholic programming to aid souls in finding stillness in God's creation. We aim to be disciples supporting other in their relationship with the Holy Trinity in silent retreats, peaceful solitude, and group settings.

The Saint Joseph Preserve for Randy and Molly Zimmerman, is a lifelong passion for God, nature, athletics, adventure, outdoor activities, and serving others. Over the years, they have enjoyed sharing their land by hosting family and friends, campouts, church gatherings and more.

History of the Saint Joseph Preserve

1998-2017

Randy and Molly purchased the original 120 acres. Over the next couple of decades, Randy and Molly and their five children enjoyed many benefits of living on the land. Over the years, they have enjoyed sharing their land by hosting: family and friends; Girl and Boy Scout events and campouts; Church gatherings, picnics and campfires; and couples preparing for Marriage and Baptism Classes; and even the Diocesan delegation from Kenya. There was always an adventure to be made whether it be: hiking, running on the trails, backpack camping, camping, axe throwing, praying the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplets while walking, outdoor games, relaxing, canoeing, swimming, star gazing, orienteering and making challenge courses for kids, skiing, pond skating and hockey with neighbors, bird and animal watching, gardening, foraging, etc.

2018

280 additional acres were purchased. The land is unique and worth preserving because of the Crow Scenic River, artesian spring, rolling glacial hills, old growth forests, prairies and abundant wildlife. Contracts with local farmers continued for cattle grazing, raising crops, and a group of local hunters.

2018-2022

The land received thousands of hours of attention from Randy, Molly, and a few hired youth helpers. It was rewarding to see the natural beauty of the land restored. During these long hours of work, God seemed to impart his grander vision for the land.

2023

The Saint Joseph Preserve incorporated as a non-profit in the State of Minnesota, recognized by the Federal Government. The Board of Directors was formed and meets quarterly. From the beginning, the Prayer Team has been a powerful source of blessings. Improvements to the preserve were made including the addition of trails and beach, campground improvements and more.
