"I began working at St. Joseph’s Preserve in 2020. At first, it was simply a part‑time job to earn a little extra money while I was in high school. I never imagined how deeply this place would shape me. Now, six years later, as I prepare for marriage and settle into a home of my own, I still find myself returning to the Preserve whenever work slows down, not out of necessity, but because this place has become a source of peace, purpose, and spiritual grounding.
Through time spent in nature and prayer, St. Joseph’s has helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect. I’ve had the privilege of contributing to many meaningful projects, including the Rosary Prayer Walk, the trail signage throughout the beautiful paths, the beach and boat landing area, and countless other improvements. Each project has taught me something valuable about craftsmanship, stewardship, and the quiet ways God speaks through creation.
Watching St. Joseph’s Preserve growth has been an incredible experience. I’m excited to see how it continues to impact individuals and families, drawing them closer to both God and the beauty of the natural world. One day, I hope to share this place with my own family and pass on the peace I’ve found here.
What began as a simple job has become a blessing in my life, and I’m grateful for every moment spent at St. Joseph’s Preserve."

"Making the time to rest and enter into silence offers an invitation to hear the Lord’s quiet whispers in the depths of our hearts. St. Joseph Preserve is a prime location for just that kind of personal retreat. Whether it’s wandering the many trails through the forest and over the hills, praying the Stations of the Cross around Little Maria Lake? or just resting for a time near a pond, the opportunities for leaving my busy life for a time and experiencing God’s Love through creation abound. The cabin is thoughtfully furnished and Molly is always attentive to any requests I might have. A short walking distance from the cabin, I can visit the beautiful chapel for prayer or use the kitchen for meal prep. I have enjoyed a couple of retreats at the St. Joseph Preserve and look forward to many more in the future."

“My kids just can’t stop talking about it!” was the text Amber sent after spending a few hours at Saint Joseph Preserve. Following a spirit led prayer time with songs and listening to a Father Mike Schmitz reflection about thanking God in St. Joseph Chapel, the group picnicked together. The participants then spent time canoeing, kayaking, swimming, playing on the slip-n-slide, and painting rocks. God supplied the perfect day for relaxing, praying, and playing!"

"St. Joseph’s Preserve is one of those places where your mind just quiets down. Within a few minutes of hitting the trail, the rest of the world fades away.
The trails wind through hardwood forests, open meadows, pine groves, and beautiful stretches along the river. They’re incredibly well marked—better than many state parks I’ve visited—but the preserve still feels wild and untouched. Every visit is a little different. I’ve seen bald eagles, deer, towering old oaks, and more than a few views that made me stop and just take it all in.
I’ve hiked here in every season, from snowshoeing after a fresh snowfall to crisp fall afternoons, and I never get tired of it. Sometimes I come for a short walk to clear my head. Other times I stay for miles. I always leave feeling better than when I arrived.
The preserve has everything you need without feeling overdeveloped. Even the restrooms are tucked away and fit naturally into the landscape. It’s obvious Randy and Molly have poured their hearts into caring for this place.
If you’re anywhere near Paynesville, do yourself a favor and spend a few hours at St. Joseph’s Preserve. I have a feeling you’ll be back."
